William & Michael Sweeney

TWO BROTHERS SHARE WHAT THEY LIKE MOST ABOUT ST. THERESE CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN DEEPHAVEN

Meet William and Michael Sweeney — two busy, bright and lively brothers who attend St. Therese Catholic School in Deephaven. Both love sports and music, and both are school “buddies” to younger St. Therese students: first-grader Michael Sullivan and kindergartener James Sullivan, who also happen to be brothers. As part of St. Therese’s buddy program designed to increase community across grades, older students paired with younger students do activities together throughout the school year.

William Sweeney – age 12 / grade 7

Q. What’s your favorite thing about having/being a buddy?
A. My favorite thing about being a buddy is getting to know my buddy better than just seeing him in the hall at school. James likes to play basketball, and he excels at math. He’s very smart. Even though he might seem quiet at first, he’s really funny and goofy. I say hi to him every day, and he always waves back with a smile on his face.

Q. Which Catholic virtue is most meaningful to you?
A. Perseverance is most important to me because without it you cannot have any of the other virtues. I try to persevere every day in my life.

Q. What is the best thing about St. Therese Catholic School?
A. There is a really awesome sense of community at St. Therese, and I love being part of that community.
Q. What is your favorite subject?
A. Math, because it’s something I feel confident doing. I also love history and geography because I like learning about different cultures and about the history of our world.

Michael Sweeney – age 10 / grade 4

Q. What’s your favorite thing about having/being a buddy?
A. It feels fun to be an older student and show leadership to younger students. Michael (first-grader) is really happy all of the time. He’s a good student and smart. I like being around him because he’s like me — fun and energetic — and we have the same name.

Q. Which Catholic virtue is most meaningful to you and why?
A. I would say integrity (justice) because I really try to do the right thing, and most of the time I try to help people do the right thing when I see wrong things.

Q. What is your favorite subject?
A. Gym, because it’s really fun and we get to play awesome games.
Mr. Jeremiah Miller, the gym teacher, is really nice. I also like grammar because it’s interactive and fun.

Q. What is the best thing about St. Therese Catholic School?
A. One of the things I love about St. Therese is the teachers.
The teachers are very nice and always want to help students learn.
